The Santa Fe 4-6-4 Hudson Jr. Steam Locomotive (#3458) and its accompanying tender represent a major mechanical milestone for Lionel's modern starter lineups. Released in the 2001 Santa Fe Freight Set, this specific locomotive was engineered with an all-metal undercarriage and six drive wheels to offer superior stability and pulling power compared to earlier four-wheel starter engines.
The Locomotive (Cab #3458)The locomotive body is built around a heavy die-cast metal boiler shell that provides native traction without needing excessive artificial weights.
Drive System: It features a flywheel-equipped can motor. The internal momentum flywheel allows the train to coast smoothly to a stop rather than jerking to a halt when track power is cut.
Reversing Unit: Equipped with a three-position electronic E-unit (forward, neutral, and reverse). The sequencing switch to lock the locomotive into a single direction is located on the top or underside of the motor frame.
Smoke System: It includes a fluid-driven puffing smoke unit. The piston is mechanically linked to the drive wheels, allowing the engine to exhaust synchronized puffs of smoke as it moves down the track.
Lighting: A high-intensity, directional incandescent headlight is mounted to the front boiler door.
The TenderThe tender is modeled after a classic coal-carrying layout, detailed with molded rivets, handrails, and realistic plastic coal load textures.
Coupler: The rear of the tender features a die-cast metal magnetic knuckle coupler, which can be triggered remotely using a Lionel uncoupling track section
.Audio System: The sound mechanism is housed entirely inside the tender shell. It features a traditional air whistle that activates when a DC whistle signal is sent from an AC transformer (like the 80-watt unit bundled with the original set).
Electrical Connection: Power is shared via a drawbar tether that mechanically links the locomotive and tender, ensuring a steady ground connection across the three-rail system.
